Study area

The KwaDukuza Local Municipality (KDM) falls under the iLembe District Municipality (IDM) jurisdiction, in KwaZulu-Natal. It is one of four municipalities that make up this district. This municipality is bordered by the Zinkwazi River in the north, the Tongaat River in the south, and is composed of 29 wards.

The KwaDukuza Local Municipality occupies both inland and coastal stretches of land, approximately 50 km in length and 14 km in width, spanning an area of approximately 633 km2 and comprising of a variety of clustered and ad–hoc settlements and small towns. The main economic nodes found here are Ballito (Dolphin Coast), KwaDukuza, as well as Zinkwazi Beach. The main economic sectors for this area are agriculture and tourism.

KwaDukuza Municipality Study Area

The boundary of this region extends from the Tugela River and the Mandeni Municipality in the north, through to the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality and the Tongaat River in the south, and from the Maphumulo Local Municipality and the Ndwedwe Local Municipality boundaries in the west to the coastline in the east.

The municipality is strategically located between Africa’s two largest harbours – the Durban Harbour and the Richards Bay Harbour. The urban areas within the municipality are Stanger town, Shakaskraal, Blythedale and Ballito, with high levels of infrastructural and service development.
