Demography

According to the most recent statistics (2016), there are some 276 719 people living in the KwaDukuza region. This number has increased, from 231 187 people in 2011, showing an average population growth of 3.58% per annum. Of this number, around 67% of the population are between the ages of 15 and 64, while only 5% are over 64 years of age which makes it a very young population. It should also be noted that around 27% of the total population fall under 15 years of age as shown in the graph below.

Unemployment refers to the percentage of the workforce that is unemployed but is willing and able to work and actively seeking employment. According to Census data 2001 and 2011 the broad unemployment rate in KwaDukuza was approximately 34.2% in 2001 and it has dropped by 9.2% by 2011 to approximately 25%.

The Figure below shows the population group distribution according to race. The municipality is predominantly black African (74%) with Indian/Asian (14%) and white approximately 5.6% of the population. Coloured is in the minority at only 1%.

The income distribution of KwaDukuza is based on the 2011 census information is shown in the Figure below. From this figure, more than 68% of all households in KwaDukuza earn less than R77,000 per annum with more than 12% showing no income. The highest percentage income group is between R19,000 and R38,000 per annum. Only 0.3% of the total population of KwaDukuza earn more that R2,4m per annum. The figures quoted above exclude respondents or households that did not provide information on annual income.

Income Distribution

The level of education in KwaDukuza is shown in the Figure below, which is based on population older than 20 years which excludes any school going person. Currently only 16.4% of the population have at least a grade 12 education with 1.6% higher than grade 12. The majority of the population in the area only have some primary education (40.5%) and some secondary education (32.6%).
